Officer Dan Bessant.... EOW: Dec. 20, 2006

The police officer killed by a bullet last night in the City of Oceanside was identified as Dan Bessant, who was a sworn member of the department for three years and a non-sworn member prior to that. Officer Bessant, 25 years old, leaves behind a wife and 2-month old child.

The shooting that killed Officer Bessant was apparently NOT related to the car stop he was assisting another officer with.

Information from the Oceanside Police Department seemed to indicate that "the shots were fired 'from some distance' away from the car stop" and the department said that "the traffic stop and the shooting were unrelated."

After an extensive search, police arrested a 17-year-old boy who lived nearby the car stop location and detained another juvenile for further questioning in the shooting.

"The Police Department has set up a memorial fund to benefit Bessant's family. Donations can be made at any Washington Mutual branch. The account number is 3133219879."

The full story from the San Diego Union-Tribune is here.

Do what you can to help out and remember this fine officer and his family during this holiday season.

Briefing is over.

God Bless the Bessant Family. Such a tragic loss of a young heroic life.

Dan chose a lifestyle that is dedicated to Service and Sacrifice. Often frustrating (sacrifice) with an occasional satisfying moment of solving someone’s problem (service). It’s the service that keeps us coming back.

It’s in honor of Officer Dan Bessant and those that we have lost before him that we provide quality service without prejudice, ill will. We do this in the face of scorn and ridicule, despite what senior editorial writers write about us in the paper.

Stay Safe!

I would like to say as a mother, I am so thankful for my wonderful family and in the same breath; I am so heartbroken to learn of such unnecessary tragedies. All of my thoughts and prayers are with Dan and his family. God took an angel on Wednesday, December 20, 2006… and we may never know why…but he is holding Dan’s family close to him right now. May you heal and be stronger than you ever thought you could be.
Dan and his family are true heroes.
God Bless
